Sugar Shack Donut & Coffee Shop + Captain Gregory’s Speakeasy

Sugar Shack is located at 804 N. Henry St., Alexandria, VA. This project consists of a 2,200 SF tenant build-out on the ground floor of a larger mixed-use & residential complex. The build-out includes the design of a commercial kitchen, coffee shop equipment, retail area, accessible restrooms, and Captain Gregory’s Speakeasy bar hidden behind a sliding wall. ALine provided professional services for the design, permit drawings, and construction administration through project completion.
Working on this first Sugar Shack project, presented us with a great opportunity for growth and learning, and became a rich experience, as we went through the program development, understanding the kitchen flow specific to these production processes, creating and utilizing fully loaded floor plans for maximum retail display, customer line queuing, branding, integrating art and budgets, addressing the accessibility conditions, addressing sound control considerations, sustainability and more. The reclaimed wood textured walls and the suspended donut art complement the orange accents of the space and embraced the warmth of this unique retail, topped with comforting fresh smells of coffee and hand-made donuts.

Sugar Shack Donut & Coffee Shop
Arlington, VA
Approximately 2,400 SF interior tenant build-out, located at 3400 Pike along Columbia Pike revitalization area of Arlington. This project includes a coffee shop and retail area, accessible restrooms, and a commercial kitchen for the production of fresh hand-made donuts and coffee.
The store preserves its identity by employing reclaimed wood and orange accents. This is the 2nd Sugar Shack store for us and working with the client’s creative team is exciting and fresh every time.
The store offers communal space that continues to delight its customers with its donut creations, beer socials, and new art murals drawn by local young artists.

Sugar Shack Donut & Coffee Shop + Nocturne Bar (Speakeasy)
NW, Washington, DC
This project is located in the Shaw area of NW Washington, DC. It consists of approximately 2,600 SF of tenant build-out with the Sugar Shack Donut & Coffee shop retail on the ground floor and Nocturne Speakeasy on the lower level of a LEED-rated small mixed-use building.
The build-out includes the design of a commercial kitchen with hood and makeup air system, coffee shop equipment, retail area, accessible restrooms and Nocturne Speakeasy bar on the lower level. ALine provided professional services for the design, permit drawings, and construction administration through project completion.
This project presented unique challenges with the installation of the HVAC systems on the roof, egress, accessibility, and building security. The small speakeasy on the lower level is a jewel, designed to convey the nocturne experience with glowing blue colors and LED bar tops.
The identity and the brand of the Sugar Shack are maintained and accentuated by utilizing the reclaimed wood textured walls, ceiling donut art, accent walls and featuring the large signature orange dough mixer machine.
