ALine Architecture Brings Creativity and Science to Summer Paloosa

On June 7, ALine Architecture was delighted to take part in the Mount Vernon District’s Summer Paloosa event, where we shared our passion for arts & crafts, design, and learning with families from our community.
As part of the festivities, we designed and presented special hand-made kite kits for kids and parents to build together. More than just a craft project, these kites offered an engaging way to explore design, science, and hands-on creativity.
Our kite design—an equal-sided hexagon inspired by traditional kite-making, made with bamboo sticks, fabric or light plastic and string—sparked lively conversations about balance, aerodynamics, the environment, and the crucial role each part of a kite plays. Many participants were fascinated to discover that the kite’s tail isn’t merely decorative: it serves as a counterweight and stabilizer, helping the kite stay upright and properly catch the wind. Too short or too heavy a tail can affect how the kite performs, and finding the right balance is part of the fun and learning that makes a successful flight so rewarding.
Through building and flying their own kites, families experience firsthand how design principles translate into real-world performance. It is wonderful to watch kids and parents collaborating, experimenting, and delighting in the simple joy of seeing their creations soar.
